Link Collection Update for September 2020

The links here were collected from Reddit, Hackernews, The Hottest
Repos on Github newsletter from the Changelog and whatever I came
across and they reflect my personal interests; only that. No need to
send me suggestions, which in the end only have SEO in mind.

I’ve changed my procedure somewhat. The topical pages simply became to
large for
org-mode
. There where enough links in the big files, that
editing became somewhat sluggish. In the future I will simply rely on

ripgrep
to find anything in the whole collection of links. I will
continue to publish the freshly collected links in one of these posts
and not add to the topical pages. And I kept the tags from collecting
these links with Emacs
org-mode
and the
capture
protocol.

See my remaining link collection pages here.

Here is a link to the Nascom schematics again as a reference.

At this point, when I build the boards below, my Nascom still existed
as the original board. The board was roughly the size of a DIN A4
sheet of paper. With the help of the Z80 buffer and the parallel bus
cards shown here, I
was able to move the Nascom piece by piece to a card system consisting
of a couple of 100x160mm cards.

my current Odroid C1 board. The C1 is currently in use as my
constantly running micro home server. The C2 builds upon the ARM A53
architecture, which is 64bit as compared to the 32bit A7 architecture
of the Odroid C1. The C2 has 2Gb of RAM and the CPU runs at 2GHz.

Until recently I’ve been using Digikam to
organise and rename my digital photos, sorting them into directories
and so on. With my recent move to the KDE5/QT5 desktop environment,
the stable 4.x Digikam needed uninstalling due to some dependency
collision on my Gentoo Linux installation.

But in the meantime, I’ve found, that
ExifTool is actually
quite superior for importing and organising for photo files from the
camera. Here is how I do it.

Digitising Cookbooks

The following post outlines how I digitised two of my most frequent
used cookbooks.

While it’s actually nice to have the “real” cookbook open during the
process of cooking in comparison to an Android tablet or iPad, which
frequently needs to be unlocked to display the recipe again, it’s
also useful to have the recipe online as well. In particular
if you’re away on a holiday, where you are doing the cooking
yourself.

Intro

In an effort to learn more about IPv6 I created an IPv6 tunnel with
SixXS in April 2013. The
FRITZ!Box 6360
supplied by the TV cable operator, who also provides the internet
access, has all the necessary setup options to operate this tunnel with SixXS
in parallel to the standard IPv4 connection.

Bookmarks - From Services to Markdown

Of course in the beginning of the web everything started with managing
your bookmarks within the browser. There wasn’t not too much content,
that you couldn’t cope with it through the browsers bookmark
management. However syncing your bookmarks between work and home was
already a problem. At the time I used Xmarks.com,
which was later bought by Lastpass. That would have been around 2006
and 2007.

Firefox was my browser of choice then, which must have been the
versions 1.5 and 2.0.

This post basically lists the various stations of my bookmark keeping
and explains, what I choose as my final solution.

Continuing the process of cleaning up the basement I found the
original Nascom circuit diagrams. These diagrams originate from 1978
and I got the actual Nascom hardware beginning of 1981 second
hand.

Python easy.install with Chocolatey

In my company I’ve basically completly moved to the Windows platform. My company is the typical Microsoft shop and since I’m doing more management stuff with slides and “official” documents Linux wasn’t simply an option any more. My company deploys a method to completly remotely install a PC/Laptop with all the required standard set of software. However there are those very nice to have programs like Notepad++, CCleaner or ConEmu, which make life under Windows bearable or if you want to add a programming language like Python or Ruby.

Emptying the Basement: My Computer History

I’ve started the process of emptying my basement. There is still stuff there, that I’ve build during my apprenticeship years with the company then called “Nixdorf Computers”, basically my computer roots from more than 30 years ago. To remember everything I photographed every note worthy item. Then I will junk everything. My computer history started with a NASCOM 1 single board computer using the Z80 microprocessor. According to Internet wisdom, this board was designed in 1977 and then sold from 1978 onwards. The size was about a single A4 paper. I bought my system used from a friend of a friend in early 1981.

End of last year, I decided it was time for a hardware update of my
desktop computer. I exchanged the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 motherboard and
the Core2 E6350 processor with an ASROCK Fatal1ty H87 motherboard

Comparing analog and digital radio on the cable.

Out of curiosity I decided to compare the audio quality of a local radio station (1Live), which I can receive in analog and in digital via my local cable operator. The privately owned radios on the cable are encrypted and can only be received with the appropriate CA Module and a SmartCard for the DVB-C card. The publicly funded station are however available unencrypted.

I’ve used Inkscape on a couple of occasions. Inkscape is such a powerful program, but I think, it’s it’s not one of the easiest to use. Somehow, each time I’m using Inkscape I’m again struggling with the same basic concepts. I can’t really say, how things would need to be changed, to make it really more simple.

I’ve written about my issues with my SUN Type6 keyboard in the company. I’ve finally found a 100% satisfactory solution. In the end, all fiddling with
xmodmap
and
setxkbmap
didn’t really help. To really fix my issues I needed to edit the file
/usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev
to shuffle some keycodes around.

If you search on delicious for “paper cd case” apart from other you’ll find these two pages (1, 2), which present Web forms. The forms allow you to enter some text and after submitting offers you to download a PDF file, which, when printed, allows you to fold a CD case from paper. Another alternative is this page.
