Plan B: New Domain Name

Well, with this bloghosts fuck up, I’m probably not going to get my domain name back, until it expires. After some googling, I’ve found others, who are also waiting for any responses from bloghosts.

Now the big question, what top level domain should I use. Perhaps a .NAME domain, which is apparently intended for individuals, who want a web presence. Or a .INFO domain to make information about yourself available. Or a .WS domain, because your have so close tie with West Samoa.

In the end a .NAME domain is just as good as a .NET domain for me personally. It’s just I’ve been using .NET for quite some time for instance in Java classes, that I would hate to give it up. But I guess, that’s what I need to do, at least for about 1/2 year.

I’ve also found two additional web hosting providers, both with very interesting feature sets in the monthly 2 to 5 Euro range. The first is Webspace-Verkauf and the second is Alfahosting. With Alfahosting, I would even be able to use Java servlets.

I guess I will make my decision next week.

And the Internet connection works as well.

Today I received the letter from Arcor, which included the necessary data to get the Internet connection working again. Simply changed user-id and password in the configuration files, burned a new CD for the router and I was online again, even with the old Telekom DSL modem. And “sometimes” I can even feel the improved download speed of 2Mbit.

Friends of ours apparently weren’t so lucky with their switch to Arcor. While the phone works, they have problems to get the Internet connection going again. They think, it might have something to do with their particular DSL router with included modem. If they want, they can have my yet unused DSL modem for testing to see, if it makes a difference.

Arcor was quicker than expected.

A quick post through my shiny and new ISDN connection hosted by Arcor. I just checked the status of my order this afternoon via the Internet and a fixed date for the switch was nowhere in sight. And then I come home from work and find a letter from Arcor in my mail, that switch is going to take place on December 2nd, 2004. In theory this letter should have arrived a couple of days before the switch actually takes place, so that I can install the new NBTA/Splitter and DSL modem. In the end I’m now connecting through the older Telekom hardware. Nevertheless, I’m going to replace the old hardware with the newer Arcor stuff.

Internet is not yet working, since the required information should be send in a separate letter, which will hopefully arrive tomorrow.

The whole process took about 3 weeks between order and delivery. Not bad, me thinks.

This bloghosts business is getting irritating.

Apparently no smooth ending of this bloghosts deal. After about 3 weeks and 3 emails, there is still no reaction from bloghosts. I find this very annoying. I wonder, if it would make a difference, if I would open an account at godaddy and initiate a domain transfer to me.

Telecom and Internet provider change immanent.

Apparently I don’t have to wait 5 or 6 weeks until my provider change to Arcor will be completed. Today I received the hardware (NBTA + Splitter and DSL modem). And another phone call to the Arcor helpline produced the information, that they are expecting to get all required information from the Telekom on December 2nd, 2004. Therefore I went to the Telekom today and changed my “XXL” to a “Standard” rate. He haven’t been using most of the benefits of the “XXL” rate anyway except for the phone calls without charge on weekends.

And I completely canceled my contract with 1 & 1 (my Internet provider). In the end I will pay an additional month for nothing, since the cancellation will only be effective as of January, 31th, 2005.

Internet Volume Savings Time to end.

This is the last day of “Saving Internet traffic”. I’m roughly 13 Euro about my 5Gb monthly volume at the end. It were in particular the Bittorrent downloads, which got me over the limit. The total files size of a particular download was a little over 300Mb, however in total over 500Mb was transfered during the online time. About 300Mb were download from the Bittorrent network and more than 200Mb were uploaded into the network. That’s just the way how Bittorrent works.
