Well, this morning I decided to install OpenOffice 2.0 since it was released recently. Up to now I’ve been using the OpenOffice binaries, but this time I decided to do the complete compilation myself. That’s the reason why I’m using Gentoo isn’t it?

Anyway, I started the installation around 10:30 this morning and at around 19:00 in the evening OpenOffice 2.0 was installed (on an Athlon 2800+ CPU). Well, the compilation was reniced to the lowest priority and during the compilation I’ve been doing some audio editing with subsequent MP3 encoding and the MP3 encoding was definitely running with higher priority. But even so, OpenOffice is quite a chunk of software and the compilation really only for someone, who has CPU cycles to spare.

First impressions are nice, though. It will be interesting to learn, how it will behave in the company, a pure MS-Office world.

Es ging am Montag zu der unsäglichen Zeit von 5:00 Uhr los (Ausstehen um 4:30Uhr) mit der Anreise zum Flughafen Paderborn. Der Flug war Ereignislos. Die Schulung zur Installation von SAP R/3 unter Unix fand bei der AddOn GmbH statt, die in München in den Microsoft Gebäuden residiert. Während der Woche haben wir sogar in der Microsoft Kantine zu Mittag gegessen. Dank des frühen Aufstehens war der erste Tag jedenfalls eine Tortur. Man war immer kurz davor einzuschlafen. Eine Geschichte, die wir im besonderen gelernt haben, ist der Umgang mit dem Fahrkartensystem und -Kauf der U- und S-Bahnen. Beim Erwerb der ersten Karten haben wir uns jedenfalls ganz schön einen Abgebrochen.

Dank des schönen Wetters in dieser Woche war der Aufenthalt insgesamt sehr angenehm. Am Dienstag wurden wir durch einen besonders schönen Sonnenaufgang begrüßt. Ein paar der Bilder, die ich während dieser Woche gemacht habe, habe in dieser kleinen Gallerie zusammen gestellt. Ich habe leider den Fehler gemacht, die Foto nicht im RAW-Format zu machen. Die Farbkorrektur lasst im einzelnen noch zu wünschen übrig.

Der Rückflug am Freitag hat sich dann noch wegen Nebels in München um ca 1:00 Stunde verschoben, sodass ich erst um ca. 21:30 Uhr wieder auf mein eigenes Sofa sinken konnte.

Ich bin ja mal gespannt, wenn ich das erste Mal in der Firma versuche, eine komplette SAP R/3 Installation durchzuführen. Der Geradeauslauf während der Schulung hat ja gut funktioniert. Und das auf alten Dell-Rechnern mit 833Mhz CPU’s und 512Mb Hauptspeicher. Jedenfalls ist SAP R/3 eine komplexe Kiste.

I’m currently in Munich to learn about the installation of SAP R/3. Two days gone, two more days to go. Pretty pleasant stay here in Munich due to the very nice weather.

And I just started my very first SAP install.

I’ve been considering the purchase of a Hauppauge WinTV PVR150 for some time now, but I couldn’t really convince myself to shell out the 70-80 Euros for the card up to now. Now, while browsing through Ebay I noticed an offer from someone living in the same city like me for an used card. In the end I was lucky to win the auction.

The card really looks like new. No traces what’s so ever of any dust. The card couldn’t have run really long in a system and even better, I could get the card immediately running under Linux after having emerged the 0.40 version of the ivtv-driver. It took a little bit of fiddling to tune the card to a new TV-station. I think, there is no GUI for this yet. Anyway, after having set the card to an available channel with something like ivtv-tune -d/dev/video1 -teurope-west -cE5 I was able to view the programm with mplayer /dev/video1. A simple cat /dev/video1 > file.mpg recorded the program into a file, which could then be viewed with mplayer or xine. The downside of all this is, that when you’re looking TV directly my Athlon 2800+ system is busy between 15% and 20%. So, I don’t think, that the card will completely replace the old Hauppauge PrimioTV. The situation under Windows with the Hauppage software is probably better.

Anyway, quite a bit new to learn. I’m wondering, when I will have my first DVD from some TV recording.

In the last couple of days I’ve been considering the move to IPCOP as my Linux router software. I even bought a Compact Flash to IDE adapter to finally move the data from the disc into a flash card.

However, after using IPCOP for a couple of days on my old 133MHz system with 40Mb RAM, I’ve come to the conclusion, that this hardware is to slow, to run IPCOP and provide a pleasant user experience. Connecting to the router by opening the browser, hitting the Connect button and waiting for the connection takes considerably more time than with the FLI4L solution.

The browser based configuration with IPCOP is way nicer than what I need to do to change the configuration for FLI4L (burning a new CD). On the other hand, the operation of the FLI4L router through Imonc or GTK-Imonc is pretty nice for the rest of the family.

I’ve an older motherboard for a AMD K6 lying around, so I guess I’ll retry IPCOP with this hardware some time in the future.

Fertig. Fast jedenfalls. Wenn ich nicht heute Nachmittag Formel 1 geguckt hätte, dann hätte es auch noch zum Aufbauen des Schranks gereicht. Das Wichtigste bei dieser ganzen Aktion war jedenfalls, das ich früh genug daran gedacht habe, durch entsprechende Maßnahmen dafür zu sorgen, das das letzte Brett durch einen einfachen Parallelanschlag an der Kreissäge auf Maß geschnitten werden kann. Damit waren automatisch viele Problem ausgeräumt, die ich bei den vorhergehenden Zimmern hatte. Ich musste damit nicht bei einem Brett von 4m Länge einen Breitenunterschied von 2cm mittels Stichsäge ausgleichen.

Auf dem Bild ist natürlich auch noch die Ultra-Moderne Leuchte “Lampe in Fassung an Kabel” zu bewundern.

Zum Glück kann ja morgen wieder Arbeiten gehen und mich von den Strapazen des Urlaubs erholen.
