Nachdem Meret erst während unseres Herbsturlaubs eine Mittelohrentzündung gehabt hat, hat sie jetzt schon wieder eine. Da Birgit zu einem Termin in der Stadt unterwegs war und Meret doch sehr über Ohrenschmerzen klagte, habe ich mich dann entschlossen direkt abends noch zum Kinderarzt zu fahren, eine Tätigkeit auf die normalerweise Birgit abonniert ist. Jedenfalls ist wiedermal eine Dosis Antibiotika fällig.

Apparently I don’t have to wait 5 or 6 weeks until my provider change to Arcor will be completed. Today I received the hardware (NBTA + Splitter and DSL modem). And another phone call to the Arcor helpline produced the information, that they are expecting to get all required information from the Telekom on December 2nd, 2004. Therefore I went to the Telekom today and changed my “XXL” to a “Standard” rate. He haven’t been using most of the benefits of the “XXL” rate anyway except for the phone calls without charge on weekends.

And I completely canceled my contract with 1 & 1 (my Internet provider). In the end I will pay an additional month for nothing, since the cancellation will only be effective as of January, 31th, 2005.

Nachdem wir uns letzte Woche das Gymnasium Schloss Neuhaus und die Gesamtschule Elsen angeschaut hatten, war heute das Gymnasium St. Michael an der Reihe. Bei St. Michael handelt es sich um eine reine Mädchenschule, die sich in privater Hand (Augustiner Chorfrauen) befindet. Das St. Michael besteht aus einer Realschule und einem Gymnasium, die alle Ressourcen gemeinsam nutzen.

Ich weiß nicht recht, was ich von der Schule halten soll. Einerseits haben wir immer wieder Gutes von Schülerinnen der Schule gehört, aber andererseits sind mir auch Sachen wie Schlankheitswahn und Markenterror der Mädchen untereinander zu Ohren gekommen. Natürlich gibt es solche Sachen auch auf anderen Schulen, aber irgendwie denke ich mir, das ein Zickenkrieg pubertierender Mädchen in einer reinen Mädchenumgebung vielleicht doch schlimmer ist. Und wie eine entfernt bekannte Schülerin meinte, bekäme man auf der Schule schon stillschweigend den Eindruck vermittelt, das man etwas “Besseres” wäre (Standesdenken).

Na wir werden sehen, wie letztendlich die Empfehlung der Grundschule ausfallen wird. Und welche Schule Jara dann letztendlich am Besten gefällt.

This is the last day of “Saving Internet traffic”. I’m roughly 13 Euro about my 5Gb monthly volume at the end. It were in particular the Bittorrent downloads, which got me over the limit. The total files size of a particular download was a little over 300Mb, however in total over 500Mb was transfered during the online time. About 300Mb were download from the Bittorrent network and more than 200Mb were uploaded into the network. That’s just the way how Bittorrent works.

Today I received the confirmation, that Arcor has accepted my order and that the required process to move from Telekom to Arcor has started. According to the notice, it might take between 5 and 6 weeks due to the hight demand. The only problem is now, that the transition will be hopefully as smooth as possible.

I’m still undecided about were to move my web hosting. After a recent article on the Heise Newticker Lycos has appeared on my map of web hosting providers. No setup fees and you can even get a complete virtual Linux box for 5.95 Euro with Debian or Redhat or “Shared Hosting” for 6.95 Euro. And web hosting at godaddy is also an option. A “Deluxe CGI” option should be available for about 8.24 Euro ($9.95 – 20% (for 1 year) + 1% credit card foreign fee translated into Euro). However I’m still wondering whether an European provider wouldn’t be a better option.
